Benefits

As well as early writing, mark-making can develop into mathematical representation and creative expression. Even if your child can write already, practicing pen control like this can build up finger and wrist strength. Exercises like this can form neater and smoother handwriting.
  1. 1. Choose a shape for your dashed lines to go inside and draw it out onto cardboard
  2. 2. Cut the shape out.
  3. 3. Add the lines, dots and dashes you’d like your child to practice.
  4. 4. Cover in contact paper or strips of clear tape.
  5. 5. Use whiteboard markers! Wipe away and use again and again.
  6. 6. Always praise any contact of pen to the board. They do not have to get the pen on the dots straight away! It takes practice!

Sedric says:

Mark-making is not just about early writing skills and learning the ‘pen hold’; it is a sensory and physical experience which can be enjoyed by all ages and abilities.
