You will need:

Paint
White paper or card
black pen

Benefits

This activity helps to strengthen those fine motor skills which is important for your child when they start to use pencils and tools. Getting those fingertips into the paint also encourages sensory integration. And as well as practising these initial numbers, your child is offered opportunities to discover spatial awareness and develop language about colours.

Write the numbers 1-10 vertically down the left hand side of a plain piece of paper or card. Older children may want to do this part themselves.

Next to each number draw a smiley face and add some antennae.

Squirt a variety of coloured paint in a dish or on a paper plate.

Start at number one and explain to your child that the caterpillar needs a longer body. “This caterpillar needs one fingerprint for his body.” and so on!

Once dry, add some feet!

Can you make a pattern with the colours whilst you count?
