Air drying clay
Sticks
Nature treasure for eyes (optional)

Benefits

Playing with clay has open-ended sculptural qualities. This allows children to use their imagination. This activity can support a child’s ability to count. Ask how many legs a spider has, then count out the number of sticks you need. Playing with the clay before it has dried provides a sensory experience as well as strengthening those fine motor skills.
  1. Tear off a section of air drying clay and knead until it feels softer and easier to mould with.
  2. Separate and roll into balls to create your spider’s body and head.
  3. Go into the garden or for a nature walk to collect some twigs and nature treasures.
  4. Count out 8 sticks for the spider’s legs and push them into the clay.
  5. Did you find something you can use for eyes? How many eyes will you give your spider?
  6. Leave to dry for around two days.

Whilst making the spider, let’s learn more about them! Where do they like to live? What do they eat?
